First of all I have to say I'm so grateful that I could learn spanish! Spanish is really the best language ever! Everyone should definitely learn it. I'm pretty sure there's a statistic out there that spanish is the second language of the church...I can't remember where I heard that so don't ask. However, thats not the reason everyone why should learn it.
1.) Learning spanish helps you with your ability to understand your own language better and the reasons for why we say things the way we do.
For example, without learning spanish, I would have had no idea that not everyone abbreviates things...just us, who are too lazy to say: what they do as work, and where they go to school, etc. (TA, ASU, MCC, AZ, VA, DC, etc.) go figure.
2.) Also, learning spanish helps people to broaden their ideas, and culture skills to get to know other people. To see where they are coming from.
When I learned spanish, I had to learn, why they said certain things in a certain way. It had to do with their culture. You really do get to appreciate your own culture better, and the flaws that we have. For example, some of my companions, would just ask people their age without any shame, or worrying about offending them. Here we would have been slapped, and the person might not even speak to us again. People there say they are 48 and it means, they are 48. It doesn't mean they are getting old, or they will begin to have health problems, or anything else we believe it means. haha 48=48!!
3.) Learning spanish, helps us have an appreciation for giving directions. haha If you speak spanish, there is no explanation for this one. haha Just ask someone for directions and tell them to explain it, in spanish....they'll start waving their arms around ;) (no offense intended!! Just something I think is funny.)
4.) Getting hired for jobs is sooo much higher. Especially in AZ. I'm pretty sure that I've found someone to speak to in spanish every time i left the house to go somewhere....seriously.
5.) Double meanings in the scriptures make so much more sense! Reading the scriptures in english and spanish helped to clarify some meanings that were almost confusing before.
6.) You can teach your kids spanish while young, and maybe it won't take as long to learn the language on their missions...if they go spanish speaking. :) Would have definitely have helped me!
7.) If you are going on a trip to a spanish speaking, you can easily get around without any frustration. You can more easily talk to the people and can understand the response.
8.) Because I say so. ;-P
Well, I almost came up with 10, but I'm sure there are other reasons out there, and I have just not thought of them. I have enjoyed learning spanish, and plan to continue to use my spanish every day if possible! Entonces, si tienen algunas preguntas, y quieren aprender. Guatemala es un lugar perfecto. Ellos hablan despasio, y muy claro. Prefiero espanol que ingles. :) Mucho mas divertido de hablar.

Keep the experiences coming...I love them!!! I know that speaking Spanish has landed Mark with jobs he wouldn't have received otherwise. It's always a good skill. Mark tried to teach me Spanish when we first got married but quickly gave up because I was pathetic at learning it. :)
